Two sixth-form students at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire have been awarded choral scholarships at Magdalen College, Oxford. Michael Diamond, a former chorister at St David’s Cathedral, Cardiff, is applying to read Medicine. Noah Williams, who was a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral, hopes to read Engineering. Both singers are members of Stonyhurst’s Schola Cantorum, an auditioned chamber choir. In recent years, the choir has toured to Paris (where they sang in Notre Dame Cathedral) and Rome. Both singers enjoy performing a wide range of music, from Renaissance sacred music to jazz, and songs from musicals. In the meantime, Noah has a choral gap year planned, which will begin with an exciting tour to China and Hong Kong with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. From there, Noah will travel to Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland, New Zealand where he has been accepted as a choral scholar from August 2016 to March 2017. He will then transfer to New York, to take up a choral scholar post at St Thomas Church, 5th Avenue in midtown Manhattan.
